While Ponzi Vineyards production is focused on Pinot noir, Chardonnay and Pinot gris, Winemaker Luisa Ponzi crafts several specialty small production bottlings.
An innovative dessert wine, Vino Gelato is made from very ripe Riesling and Muscat grapes. After harvest, the grapes are pressed and the juice is frozen solid. As the mass beings to melt, the intensely sweet juice melts first, leaving the water behind. The winery team diligently tastes as the sweet juice melts, waiting to find that perfect moment when the desired sweetness, flavor and acid profile are reached. At that point the juice is fermented in stainless steel, then bottled and released in the spring of the following year.
The complex aromatics include candied orange, mandarin, jasmine, honey and ginger. The viscous mouth shows lychee, tangerine and cardamom with just enough acidity to keep brightness on the finish.
Cin Cin Pinot Noir Brut Rosé is a festive sparkling wine crafted in the méthode champenoise, debuted in 2013 with the 2008 vintage. Only 100 cases were produced and quickly sold out. After such a positive response, in 2013 Winemaker Luisa Ponzi selected Pinot noir grapes for a second Cin Cin. Just released in 2016, the 2013 Ponzi Cin Cin Brut Rosé can now be enjoyed in Ponzi Tasting Rooms and purchased online.
